2nd Annual Preble County Archaeology DayOn Sunday, July 25, the Preble County Historical Society will host their second annual Archaeology Day. This event will take place from 1-5 pm at the Preble County Historical Center, 7693 Swartsel Road, Eaton, (1 mile NW of Gratis, 6 miles SE of Eaton accessible off St. Rt. 122. Admission to the Historical Center on July 25 is FREE to all society members and to all children under the age of 18. A modest donation of only $2.00 is requested from all other guests. One of the many highlights of the day will feature the Miami Valley Flute Circle & Southern Singers Native American flute music, along with drumming and dancing. Potter Kosia Oshiro will show pit-fired pottery: hand crafted functional use pottery, fired in a pit on the grounds at the Historical Center. Pots will be placed in the fire pit early in the morning and will be uncovered about 4:30 pm in the afternoon. What a delight it is to see how the clay transforms into beautiful works of art! The day’s programming will include fossil and archaeological specimen identification from 1:30-5pm. From 2:00 - 4:00pm, children’s activities will include games, puzzles, traditional Indian culture games, word games, and a scavenger hunt. Beginning at 2pm, “The History and Archaeology of Fort Meigs”, will be presented by Ohio Historical Society Archaeologist Bill Pickard. At 3pm, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery Archaeologist Lynn Simonelli, will present “Archaeology in the Miami Valley Area”. The society’s lunch stand will be open serving grilled sandwiches, salads, homemade pie, ice cream, and drinks. The Center’s buildings will be open for touring, hiking trails will be open with the opportunity to take a wagon ride to the newly restored wetland area.
